Building Designs, Overall Level Design

I been trying to create different sprites for different pieces of a building for my game, but it doesn’t seem quite right. I just need some basic advice on how to create overall levels and make them interesting.

For buildings, are you making background sprites or actual level sprites? Such as being able to interact or go inside of them.

Best bet would be to look at existing games or projects with theme similar to yours or even look at real architecture and base designs off of it. I was making some background skyscraper sprites, and it definitely helps to find references, so it doesn’t seem very boring or plain.

Ok thanks! Yeah, I just been making buildings the player can interact with. Since there is a little parkour in it, and I want to make sure it’s goes toward the realistic side of how buildings look.

Realistically, the only decent locations I can think of that would incorporate parkour very well would be some sort of construction site, large warehouse, and possible a manor or mansion in general, but that might be more difficult to do. Usually anything with large storage including stacks of pallets or construction, various half build structures or frames to work with would be a better alternative. At least this blend in a lot better for general parkour.

Another idea would be the side of a large building or skyscraper which you could use various ledges, fire escapes, scaffolding, or lifts, since often times, there are crews to wash or repair windows or repair the building in general. This would be the easiest to do, since you could have it so you can go inside a section of the building, as well as being able to go outside, but it really depends on what you plan for the game.

What really helps me is watching other game developers on youtube, and seeing what kind of tricks and things they use. There are also specific videos on game level layout too.
