Was always my understanding that DM and PM are the same thing. Back in early 2000s they were mostly called Private Messages, stuff that you just wanted to say to one person, and you’d use a private channel or send a message to their inbox or whatever.

Now that everyone and their mothers (and grandmothers, and aunts and uncles and third cousins) are using social media, posting things for everyone to read, the new term became DM - Direct Message, meaning a message sent directly to one person and one person only. Though the term itself, DM, has come to be associated with negative connotations. Like someone sending “DMs” to a random user because they think their profile selfie is attractive, because some people get confused and seem to think that a game forum or comment section is eHarmony. :laughing:

Whereas tagging someone is just meant to send them a notification in public chat to call their attention to a subject.
