I am currently DMing a Pathfinder campaign with 5 players in it. It’s been an incredible experience and everyone is enjoying it a lot. I made a lot of unique concepts that blew everyone’s minds, like a dreamscape sequence and a dwarven vault puzzle. However, I’m running out of good ideas that have the balance of roleplay and mechanics. Does anyone have unique creatures, items, or stories I could use in an undead winter apocalypse campaign?

Simple… long story… but a simple story.

To keep it short:

  • went through weird phase
  • didn’t like DinoDev
  • changed it
  • regretted it
  • back to DinoDev

When I made the original choice to switch to 00T I renamed my original forum account to 00T_Free and started using this one as my main. The reason is because the forum account I was using previously (00T_Free) was linked to my free Flowlab account, and it was a pain to keep switching accounts. That old account had such good stats and badges though lol

Life is full of lots of regrets. I have many regrets, although I will not disclose them all here.

Thank you,
DinoDev

Bring in everyday items but throw a fantasy catch on them that can fit to your theme.

That’s why before making big changes I always wait 24 hours before doing it. It’s saved me a lot of money and time.

That’s what I was thinking, I came up with a switchblade that multiplies all force that is enacted upon it, which means it does double damage but everytime you quickly grab it you have a chance of it just being yeeted out of your hand.

That’s pretty sick actually

I thought it would be hilarious for when everything is already used up, the fighter is down and the mage is out of spells. The rogue just goes “never fear, I have our salvation!” And just accidentally flings the dagger into space, or alternatively just oneshots the enemy with a well-placed throw.

Does anyone have ideas for a good side quest or surprise encounter that will force the players to think creatively?

I’m not sure if your campaign is mostly story based or just game play, but if you have any NPCs or good aligned characters that the players are fond of, you could pull a plot twist where they had been after something for their own gain and they’re technically evil.

Like an NPC who assigns the players quests or something could be some evil warlord searching for a lost artifact to regain his own throne and while in a dormant body, he’s using the players to do the work for him until it’s too late.

In terms of items, I came up with some really goofy and canon ideas such as:
A condensed Bulb, basically a super condensed light bulb that will light up when a circuit is made, including touching it with both hands and creating a circuit, but it’ll glow bright as the sun and quickly burn out if not careful.
Plus it can be used as a grenade and when it is broken, it implodes, pulling all characters from a certain radius close to it and shooting small glass fragments at insane speeds. Like small grains of sand hitting your body at mach 10 or something. Kind of a broken item, but you can reduce the damage or whatever needed.

I forgot the name of this, but I think I called it the Wrathful Coin. Whenever someone sees it with greed, it has a little bear trap mechanism on the face of the coin with a small eye that’s usually closed unless awoken by a greedy owner. Basically it bites the current owner through their pockets or even tear through bags or chests to bite the owner. It’s not enough to really damage them, but it’s funny to annoy rude NPCs. Plus it still acts like a standard gold coin (or whatever currency you use) and when you buy something for only that amount, the new owner will discard the coin out of fear and pain. I wanted the concept of being able prank the players or each other by often giving each other the coin. If anyone only sees it as monetary value instead of a relic, it’ll start biting them.

One Chaos Mercenary was called Dealer who had a deck of cards that could transform into any weapon he chose. Probably gonna make him somewhat related or referenced to The Magician since the both have card based attacks.
Anyway, after defeating him, the players are rewarded so many of his cards that can temporarily transform into any weapon the DM chooses, from a literally stick to a one hit barrage. But they are consumable.

One of my earlier ideas is the infinite water mug. Basically an antique looking white ceramic mug that seems to pour an endless amounts of water. There is a bottom to it so you can’t store anything inside of it, but when tipped over, it just fills itself back up as it pours. The water will be salt water so it’s not an infinite clean water source, but it could be used for different strategies like putting out fires or annoying enemies. But when used in closed areas like underground dungeons or rooms, you’ll drown if you’re not careful.

Door to everywhere.
A broken item I created pretty recently for a short story I wanted to write. It’s a small key that can be used on existing doors for active minds, but those who know of the artifact or has high active minds, can generate a door in front of them. The key fits into the lock and the door reveals a portal to wherever the user wants to go. This could be used to teleporting to different quests like fast travel, but the user has to have an image or have seen the place before, because you can’t go to a place you don’t know existed.

The Dungeons Die.
I designed this item specifically referencing dnd as it’s a D20 and whenever the user needs a specific skill or ability, they can roll for it. Such as strength, if they roll a high number, they can perform the task and be able to lift insanely amounts of weight for a short time, but a 1 or low number either cancels the ability or they gain temporarily muscle weakness and exhaustion. Not sure how this would work for standard dnd as you already have stats you roll for, but maybe it could be used as a second action, but with the costs of ruining yourself in the process.

One item I actually found on a dnd website was a portal hole. It was literally a rug that when laid out, it presented a hole. You could store whatever you want, including people and animals, but when the hole was closed or folded up, they’ll suffocate. I think there was a limit as it was only so deep and wide, but it was such a neat concept.

I had some other ideas I made specifically for my own dnd campaign, but I can’t think of them off the top of my head.
