May I ask, why so?

A lot of the games i play have good everything exept for the story which always makes me mad.
but some games have a reason but i can still complain. ex:
Minecraft_cover
an overall good game but the fact that the only “story” you get is an objective to beat the ender dragon.

Yeah but Minecraft is more a survival game, there technically is no story.

I’m all seriousness, you would want to achieve perfect harmony on all categories when making a game for it to really stand out above others and to keep a consistent audience.

Although, I feel gameplay itself would be the most important. I feel mechanics and gameplay tie together since mechanics are features that the game includes why gameplay is how the game would be viewed when played over by someone else.

When making a game, I focus more on story myself, or at least I do currently, because I typically enjoy story based games, however, you can have an amazing story, but if you have poor gameplay, no one wants to tough it out long enough for it.

There are games, like Geometry Dash for example, where there is basically no story, but has a very high paced and simple (and replayable) gameplay that makes it enjoyable for anyone.

Games like Fnaf that uses limited storytelling and a very unique mechanic of fending off against animatronics, which seem simplistic (at least Fnaf 1-3), but have been enjoyed over the years for the story. The gameplay can be a bit repetitive, but since it offers a decent challenge, it keeps players motivated.

It mostly comes down to how you want your game to be based around, whether it be mainly story or mainly gameplay. But I feel that gameplay is one of the most important aspects of game design
One issue I have with story games is how there is very little to no replayability. Games like Halo MCC, had an amazing story, but the gameplay was very repetitive and if it wasn’t for the story, I would have gave up after Halo 3. Each game included some new mechanic that made each game slightly different, but they were very much similar.

Other games like Call of Duty include zombies which adds replayable content to the game for players who beaten the campaign and want to play endless waves with friends.

But really good story based games either have multiplayer or some sort of feature that makes the game live on, but strictly story and you only need to play it once and you’ll probably never touch it again.

Or you could make a story based game that changes based on your actions, so there are many different endings. These can get boring, or I find them boring, since the story is based on how you want it to end, but including multiple endings it achievements can add some new content, but once it’s beaten, no one will probably return to it.

One game I personally enjoyed was Titan Fall 2. Now the game does have multiplayer, but it was broken for the longest time until I heard they fixed it recently. The campaign had such fluid movement and parkour mechanics that I just want to run the Gauntlet over and over even after beating the story because the gameplay and mechanics were just equally as good.
Although it’s hard to pull this off, but good parkour games that have fluid motion would make for fun replayable games as well. Anything super difficult and tests your patience, I feel probably won’t do so well unless you have the upmost determination.

Minecraft doesn’t have any existing story, but it’s basically a game where the player tells the story since anything’s limitless.

However, there is no lore that I know of for the world generation itself, including mobs, structures, etc, but there are a lot of theories on various different and unique aspects of the game.

I think Mojang just added whatever sounded cool, but really makes you stop and think how it would look in a story. Like the deep dark/ancient cities, temples, the nether and bastions, etc.

The thing is theories are nothing official or anything. It’s just a bunch of information found and put together to make something that would make sense and to predict what might happen next or to even figure out hidden parts of the story.
Minecraft has no official “lore” or anything. It’s just a pixel survival game. People believe there’s lore because putting a bunch of random information they found and putting them together gets something that actually might make sense. I remember that one of MatPat’s MC theories was that Endermen were past humans so they don’t like current humans looking at their new hideous forms. The way those past humans formed into Endermen was when they used too many Enderpearls, Endermites showed up and acted as parasites and formed them into what we know today. But like MatPat says, “it’s just a theory… a GAME theory.” None of it is official. Not until it gets approved from the creators or something.

Who else here wants to make a frackin rango style western??

Technically it’s not. Since theories are up to the player to come up with, it’s not canon to Minecraft.

I don’t think Minecraft has any story whatsoever unless you consider the achievements as some sort of hidden story, but they are mostly goals for you to aim for when playing the game.
Again, it could be considered very limited storytelling, but since Minecraft is a sandbox open world survival game, again, the player tells the story. That’s why Minecraft has survived for so long since you can do whatever you want. Basically a game with no rules.

I know you can get mods that can probably add a story and other features into the game, but they still aren’t canon since it’s made by the community.
