Maybe it depends on where you live, but where I live you kind of want to work overtime because they pay you 1.5x the normal pay rate for it if you’re an hourly wage worker. Because of that and because overtime also requires a bunch of paperwork in advance, most bosses will do a lot to avoid making you work overtime.

My current job is exactly like that. When I was working full time, they would send us home early if we had any overtime built up since it was paid by time and a half.
But I only work part time aside from my college classes and that alone fills up most of my schedule.

I have a job I love (teaching kids robotics) and have never had overtime. I’ve had poor managers before but never ones that required too much of me, just too little. Of course, that did mean I do more work because everyone else is slacking, but give and take.
