Now that I’m thinking about it, the only two games I have ever bought for $40+ are Ready or Not and BOTW. I am glad I did for botw but that was a once in a decade game and I won’t be spending that money for tears of the kingdom. You need something seriously special to ask for that amount of money, not just higher pixel count and different puzzles. I miss the good old days of the wii and .io games.

Which makes me wonder about expensive dlcs: why do you need to pay for them when they’re basically just updates?

Dlcs are warranted in some places and despised in others, but really they’re just another tool in the arsenal of a game dev. For example, the security breach free DLC saved the game, the ror2 dlcs add more content but don’t gatekeep the base game, and the spiderheck dlc is just to support the author with some free skins as a thank you. They’re similar to paying for in-game items: for Helldivers it’s a fun way to customize characters, whereas in COD it’s a horrid moneygrab.
