Yep, I think so.
Games will only lock when the timer runs to 0.
Yes, it’s 100% safe to submit early and then continue working on your game.
In fact, it’s kind of a good idea, so that:
- You can’t forget or miss the deadline, the game will be submitted already
- There is no risk of some last-minute submission problem
I would encourage everyone to submit at least a little bit early, and not wait until the last day or last minute.
What is the jam’s theme?
Unintended Consequences
Dang it! I went on vacation for winter break and missed the start. It’s probably too late to start a game.
Nah, I’m starting today lol
It’s never too late
It’s definitely not too late. If I remember correctly @Samuel_Tome won the first official Flowjam with a game (Tonight) he started like two days before the deadline?
I don’t recommend waiting until that late though
It looks awesome.
here’s a small video of it
Yup it looks really cool. I can also see that blood thing Extrez made before.
I give up, there’s like only 10 people who are actually good at art so actually trying to make a game without good art is just a waist of time. You can have the worst game ever and with good art its a masterpiece and an amazing game without good art and its just terrible. I for one am just awful at art and struggle with the character every time so at this point I either find someone who’s actually incredible at art I can work with, or just give up on game development for the rest of my life.
Sorry about my ranting I’m just upset I can’t really do anything because my lack of skill towards art.
Just make some random 8-bit adventure story game or something.
Technically Art isn’t everything in a game. You can have the best design, but if the game is poor, then the game is basically a waste.
I will admit, the code in flowlab is much easier to Learn than Pixel art since coding is mostly just muscle memory whereas Art is unique every time. So it takes some skill and dedication to get it right. That might be why a lot of people who are good at art make winning games cause the code don’t take much to make a polished game, depending on what it is.
Same, I’m bad at pixel art
I wish someone would help me with it
I think I’ll make a topic for someone to help me before the jam is over.
Well, I just practice a whole bunch, like look at my pixilart stats
These are the steps I go through:
- Go to Lospec and find a palette that fits my needs, has a theme, and strongly resonates with me
- Make a bunch of experimental art
- experiment with it in the game page
- Edit, the first version is never up to expectations, so editing is always a must(unless I’ve done the same ish thing before)
With my art I normally go with a cartoony style. Because of this I have started to outline my pixel art.
Why not use the included 1-bit or 1-bit platformer sprites by Kenney? Those could definitely be used to make a nice-looking game, and there are a lot of sprite options there.
In case anyone was curious, yes, the “playing your games” stream is going to air for its third round next upcoming weekend!
The “playing your games” stream is a tradition that was born a little over a year ago from today, where I play as many flowjam games as I can and rate them with a rubric, providing my commentary and doing my best to keep the audience entertained. It has been a blast the past two times.
This one will take place on the 13th of January at around noon. Because I have the unique ability to reroute chores to other days due to being at college, I will be able to run this stream not only with no disruption but also with no time limit. I intend to cover every game that had effort put into it.
This stream will also be packaged with a few basic rules to prevent people being nuisances in stream chat like last time. I’m looking forward to this as much as you!!!
