Additionally, I learned that you should avoid saying that someone’s oc looks like an existing character unless they’re asking for it. It seems kind of rude.

Well, it depends.
Since most people OC usually tend to represent or derive ideas from existing characters. Like a few of my own story characters are based around basic personality concepts and character designs. Although it don’t really seem like it since most of them are only mentioned via writing. I see a lot of artists on Instagram who draw their own characters and they first started off with art of existing characters from genres they liked and eventually derive their own characters from it.
When I went to a writing convention last year, I was told that you shouldn’t worry about basing your story off of an existing one since so many stories and books have been written, it’s impossible to come up with something entirely unique. The same mostly goes for characters.
That’s why I liked SCP, because characters are so unpredictable. Like you could have a literal inanimate object make people explode for no reason. Plus you can make absolute abominations and it for some reason still fits.
