What I would do is: make sure it follows the player within a range, and if it is in that range while the player is not moving, wander (but do not leave that range)
Now to avoid getting stuck on walls, I guess the follow could be the trail example JR made, but i kind of like the mechanic like in ssb and other games like Mario, where they go in a bubble if they’re too far away and then you can pop it.
