a*(-1) allows for 2 strings and an operator input telling the equation what to do, rather than the code trying to figure out what to do based off of 2 strings — the operator just allows the inputs to relate to each other
a(-1) is just 2 strings without an operator, so they don’t know how to relate to each other — I know that this is different than actual math, but it makes code a lot easier to write and to fix - distributing is just another thing to teach the AI and might get complicated when you can use haxe in the expression.

It wouldn’t tell you it’s a typo because if there is a typo it’ll just be an error and the code won’t run
