They serve a huge importance, actually.
A lot of neurotypical people who have trouble understanding tones in real life, let alone through text online, have learned to use them to understand when people are sarcastic, joking, or serious.
It also helps neurotypical people for atypical people to use them, so it’s easier to communicate with atypical people.
In general, it’s actually a really good thing — and clearly, it’d help Maniac 
You could simply just say it’s a joke. I can see where it would be useful, but considering that i study traditional English writing, you can easily express emotion through text without having to add “tones”.
Yeah, bruh guys u could just say “jkjkjk” instead, which is a known abbreviation that everyone knows. Sarcasm tone tags are also rendered useless beCauSe yOu CaN jUsT tYpE LiKe ThIs
