Usually I recommend you start with making one high quality platformer. After that you can expand into genres that interest you. Constantly go back into levels you made and ask yourself “what can I do to make this better”?

Keep making the platformer better until it no longer looks like a basic flowlab game. Learn all the basics, for instance:
-how to plan a game on a document
-movement code for enemies
-powerups
-coin or life counter
-puzzles
-making a good background
-making a main menu
-creating something unique about your game specifically and capitalising on it
-animations for the player
-custom artwork for everything (or most things)
