I’ve started a ton of projects in Flowlab, but I haven’t had the skills to actually make an RPG till now. I started working with Flowlab for around 2 and a half years ago, and during that time I have had many massive ideas, and “dream games”, but didn’t really know how Flowlab worked. One thing I think I have excelled at for a while though Is pixel art, and most of my projects are pretty good looking, but they’ve been basically nothing more than glorified art demos, so I’ve made it my goal to push my limits and hopefully make something cool.
I’ve teamed up with two of my friends and assembled the “dream team”, cus I’m the main artist/coder, one is the musician, and one is also really good at programing. We all help each other in our respected field of game dev, and I’m hopeful we can make this game a reality. To give you guys an idea of how the game will play, I’ll paste some stuff from my game dev document:
Basic Gameplay Loop:
Explore → Fight Enemies → Find Loot → Head Back to Village → Sleep → Level up → Repeat
Trading Gameplay Loop:
Take over enemy hideouts → Restore trade routes → Gather Resources → Trade materials you gather for money → buy weapons and accessories to help you take out the next enemy hideout
Gameplay Loop Explained:
Go from town to town to progress, and between the towns lie enemy infested territories. There will be enemies patrolling here, and there, but most of them will be at the forts scattered around, and even more guarding the enemy castles. Generally, the harder the fort or castle you defeat, the better the loot you get. The enemies are tough, so you have to strategically pick when to turn back to avoid dying, or passing out from overexerting yourself, in order to take back the loot. Otherwise, you have to do it all over again if you fail, and if you fail, you will be sent back to the last town you visited. When you make it back, you can sleep in an inn for a price, or sleep on the ground for free. The thing is, only at an inn, will you be able to level up while you’re sleeping. Why? Because when you sleep on the ground, you don’t get nearly as much sleep, and you don’t feel as good.
Trading Gameplay Loop Explained
When you take out an enemy hideout, you can free the townspeople that were held captive. This applied to all enemy hideouts. When you finally take back control of the town and the castle of an area, then all of the townspeople can come back and restore the town to its former glory. Each town prices things differently depending on the resources around them, so you can make money if you understand the economy. For example, buying a wolf pelt in a snowy forested area, and then traveling to a town that is in a desert that has no wolves around. The idea of a wolf pelt would be more novel to them, so they would pay more for that wolf pelt. Stores, and the surrounding areas only have so many resources, so you can’t just make infinite money, you have to wait for stuff to restock. You also have a limited inventory space, so you can only carry so much.
The Hook:
When you level up, what is upgraded depends on what you did during the day. If you fight enemies, then your strength increases, and you will do more damage. If you travel around a lot, your endurance increases. If you dash a lot, your speed increases. If you sneak past enemies a lot, your stealth increases. Generally, if you want to increase a stat, you need to do the action that utilizes it. Also, a stat will only level up if you did more than what you did to level it up last time
