SOL - SMALL ENEMY UPDATE

Meet our newest member of the enemy family… Rupert the Dummy!

DummyEnemy1

He doesn’t really say (or do) much, but this will be the starting point of the damage and health system, which I aim for it being the last update until the next dev log update video this month.

Thanks for tuning in! More to come with Rupert and his dummy friends!

Cheers!

SOL - COMBAT UPDATE :dart:

Got some pretty decent progress in! Combat system is starting to pull itself together:

  1. Added a new combat system using a raycast that will detect the enemy. Direction based off of mouse movement like the previous collision-based detection system.
  2. Made detection through the enemy (in this case, Rupert).
  3. Added a Rupert-specific damage animation. It is not through pixel art, so can’t really show it here, but you will be seeing a more refined version via this upcoming dev log video.
  4. Made it so that Rupert moves a little bit after the third attack.
  5. Made it so that the attack FX flip depending the player position in comparison to Rupert’s postion.
  6. Re-added the player attack cursor animation.
  7. Added raycast intractability to the door obstacle and its hitbox.
  8. Fixed some issue with the position flipping for Rupert.

Just need to add some particles for Rupert’s damage (and ultimately his death), some optimizations for the raycasts before it gets crazy, then it will be onto working on a basic enemy if I have time.

Thanks for tuning in!

Cheers!

(Is that just a greeting? I though one said Cheers when they were… whatever it’s called. Is there a reason you, rcreger, use Cheers to end your updates?)

Not really, just mostly became a habit on here. I use it mainly as “best wishes”

EDIT: Looking up the definition, the British version of cheers does mean “best wishes” whilst departing a conversation, so it could have been a subconscious thing of me saying it, having consumed a decent amount of British shows and stuff.

Interesting… I use Best, or thank you most of the time.

SOL - A FEW FIXES :wrench:

A small update that fixed some things that have been annoying me for quite a while:

  1. Big one - fixed the small animation flicker when falling off of surfaces/cliffs. This one has annoyed me sooooo much and I am so happy I found where the issue was.
  2. Made it so the camera is more reliable to attach to the player character in multiple different levels (test)
  3. Fixed a sprite flip issue where the sprite would flip incorrectly in some levels. It was due to the function of the camera connection - sprite flips behave properly with a camera object in-level to work with it.

That is all, for now. I tend to work later on days off so we’ll see if I throw something else in here at some point.

Thanks for tuning in! Cheers!

demo soon? maybe? please?

Goal is currently to get a demo out by late 2023 - early 2024.

This is very much a passion project, so work only really gets done when the passion shows up lol
That said, I have been streamlining a lot more and so a lot of work has been done this past month compared to earlier this year.

But yes - demo is confirmed to be coming soon-ish. Will be making an announcement trailer a month or so in advance of its release for sure:D

realy you should start a kickstarter, get a team, make this the best sol posible

I have thought about Kickstarter, and maybe a Patreon too. However, I want to develop more of a presence on my YouTube before doing that, especially with how far out the project is from being done. Get some numbers up on there and maybe actually talk in a video lol

I do have a small team, got glowbug for some art and Crigence for game logic - both are fantastic in their respective fields, but it also comes up to their own personal availability along with their own projects. Besides, I am pretty content with developing this hands-on all the way through right now (with some help with the prior mentioned, of course)

that sounds great! (i sorta just want some of those sweet rewards they give to people who support it like the dream bosses from hollow knight)
this has to be one of the best projects on flowlab, i have a boss concept for you if you have time

uuuhhh , ill just say my idea then, so you know rupert?
DummyEnemy1
he’s there to teack you basic combat, well what if rupert built himself a new body and gained sentience and you had to face him in a boss fight, the purpose of the boss is to teach advanced combat

@rcreger thats my idea

I honestly like the idea of the player thinking “oh, it’s just a dummy, I’mma gonna beat all of them up” and then they come back for revenge, like a pile of Rupert corpses meshed together and VERY angry lol

Neat idea, might use it haha
