Thorough Micro Reviews! (TMR)

@ToastMaster64 It’s fine m8

Sorry @microgamer1, I only read the first paragraph as if I was accepting the terms and conditions.
Though reading it now, I will gladly give you a game description.

DRIVE is an endless runner, similar to T-rex chrome.
Difficulty is all around; starting out easy and gets harder as a endless runner.
I guess you could say average difficulty…

Music is from flowlab (for I am using the free edition at the moment), but I have a wide range of assortments as you can pick to which one you want to listen too (including mute).

Art is mostly original, with some special guest characters from other games.
There is also a shop where all the playable characters can be bought and selected.

The game is meant to be controlled via touchscreen (clicks),
but I have fully implemented keyboard controls.
Keyboard controls are in the description.

@“JR 01” Thanks for replying with this, it will be extremely helpful for when I review your game! Also, no worries, I totally understand! I’m currently finishing up @rcreger 's review, and then heading to bed, as it’s getting late and I have school tomorrow. That being said, I’ll probably be able to review your game as well as @ToastMaster64 's game sometime later tomorrow.

Thanks, Micro

@rcreger Here is my TMR for your game A Boy In Armor

WOW, I love this game! It’s put together so well! I can tell you did this with passion, and I commend you for that. I’ll set up this TMR’s categories a bit differently, to fit the story based theme of the game.

Music: I’d say the music aspect of this game is great! The music choice for the different sections was spot on, but I feel like you could’ve added different overworld music for areas like Wolfhang’s castle, maybe fading into a darker piece, or quieted down the music in areas like small forts, it would spice up ambiance, which is SO important for these story and emotion driven games. Other than that, the music setting was outstanding!
I’ll give the music category a 8.5/10. This isn’t at all a huge gripe, but it’ll help your game’s feel tremendously!

Art: Wow!! The spritework in this game just felt so right for the setting, and meshed so well with itself!! The characters looked great, the menus did (I love the design of the pause button and stuff, with how it looks when you hover over it. The art is on the edge of being professional grade!
I’ll be giving this a 9.5/10! Fantastic job!

Controls: I won’t be giving a gameplay review because of the type of game this is. The controls were exactly what they needed to be: simple. The attack button worked well, you could move around easily, and it was great!! The A and S being sprint was kinda odd, and I would suggest sticking with arrow keys for movement, with pressing shift to change the speed of left and right to a higher number in the code, and releasing shift to change it back to walking speed. There is also something to fix which I’m going to start calling the “Phantom Jump”. It’s where if you walk off a ledge without jumping, you can use said jump in midair. Definitely not a big issue in your style of game, but it exists and shouldn’t be there. You can fix it by allowing the character to jump only when touching the ground instead of refreshing the character’s jump when they touch the ground, if that makes sense. A couple SUPER tiny things, if you press jump at any time, you hear the jump sound. Make it only heard when the force is actually applied to the character. Also, give the attack a cool down, cause spamming attack looks weird, and you don’t need to attack much (or at all, but I understand why it’s there) in the game. There was one gamebreaking bug I found, however: if you clock on any wisp besides the first one, the game freezes up and you can’t play on. Please fix this, it’s the only huge issue with the game!
Despite all my minor gripes, I’m giving this an 6.5/10! It’s honestly pretty good, and the issues I found aren’t uncommon to find in a game (without looking at the wisp bug), they just need some attention and should be more or less easy to deal with and polish up.

Storyline: Obviously, I’m adding this section in due to the type of game. I loved the storyline of this game! It’s an easy to follow storyline that still feels like it is important to the player. The attention to detail with some of the interactions, such as the crows or all the bones is awesome! I just wish that maybe your actions had a slight bit of consequence, such as if you killed some, all, or even just one person along the way, you couldn’t help the bandit, and would kill them, or maybe you would get a different reaction from the father at the end or from Wolfhang. Just a personal recommendation, but with these types of games, it is absolutely outstanding to see the game respond to a player’s choices, especially when given a ‘set’ narrative. Also, I found a sizable amount of typos, of which I probably didn’t find them all, but I tried to find all of them, and I will have a list at the end of this review with the general place of each typo, not necessarily in order.
I’ll be giving this section an 8/10. Phenomenal storyline, but you could’ve made it slightly dynamic, and the typos can be polished off.

Concept: This is always one of the shortest sections. This game was what it was supposed to be: a story based adventure, without difficulty, where you find the story and piece it together yourself. Perfect! The game did just that!
10/10. Nailed it!

TOTAL: 8.1/10!! Amazing job with this game! There are a few minor kinks in the game, but definitely nothing major! Polish it up and honestly it would be in the upper 9’s!!
Unmentioned suggestions: You know what would be awesome? If you could cut down the noose at the Death Tree. It would be a nice touch to the game that would make the narrative a bit more dynamic. I know I jumped up and tried. Make a separate invisible object up there with its own hitbox that tells the tree to do an animation of it falling to the ground, so the player has to jump to hit it, and therefore do it purposefully. I think it would feel amazing for a player to try that and it actually work!

TYPOS I FOUND (this’ll make the review seem even longer than it really is):
In the Dragons book, King Valors should be King Valor’s
In the second book, there are multiple of the alert’s buttons that say Trun page and not Turn page
In the title of the label on the back of the gravestone at the beginning, Fathers should be Father’s
When talking to the bandit, mothers should be mother’s
In the first book, Wolfhangs should be Wolfhang’s
When interacting with the Death Tree, fathers should be Father’s
In the intro text, fathers should be father’s
In the Unveiled poem, the first Turn page button isn’t capitalized, and devils should be devil’s
When talking to King Valor, there is a point where there are two periods, like this (…), and I couldn’t tell if it was intentionally put between the sentences
I hope this helps tidy everything up, and happy developing!!

All the typos are mistakes except for the occasional two to three periods @microgamer1 , as it is hard to demonstrate pauses in speech in dialogue with no actual voice actor, so I had did my best. The first thing I"m obviously going to fix is the typos. I didn’t even notice! Thanks for the review, and I’ll try to find ways to make a differentiating storyline. I have to ask, if you know how, is that is there a way to make two buttons on the “alert” so that there could be two possible outcomes for an answer? This would help a lot since the player has more control of their story. Thanks again, and good luck with the reviews!

P.S. I can see that the controls had bought down the score a great lot, so I will try to do something about those. Of course, I will try to fix all the things you have stated, and add as well.

@rcreger Ok. I was just making sure with the (…)'s, and the alert has no way to display two buttons, but I have a great idea and will try to create a test game for it. I love trying to exploit mechanics, so this’ll be fun, and if it doesn’t work, you can design two separate custom made buttons, which would be cool, that appeared and acted dependently on what choice is being made.

One thing I would try to fix quickly is the wisp freezing the game bug, where clicking any wisp OTHER than the first one freezes the game completely. Many curious players will click the second wisp after finding the first wisp is also clickable.

~Micro

Fixed up all of the typos you had stated @microgamer1 , and had found some others, too

I’m not sure what is going on with the wisps, and I may just have to take away it’s alert so people can enjoy better. If you know what it is, tell me, and if you don’t, tell me if you don’t so I can get ready to replace or get rid of the alert.

Fixed the jump sound FX so it only plays once for each time you jump, so the sound won’t spam. I’m going to try and figure out a more sensible sprint button, and how to make the attack have a cool down, which would make sense.

And please keep in mind I am using free, so I can’t make it so I have to use objects to make it so the player can choose his/her story. It would help much more if it was in an alert. Thanks!

@rcreger I understand the limitations of free version, I’m actually using it myself!
I’ll look into it the wisps real quick, and I’m creating a simple test game that I can put a bunch of bug fixes in with, and help people out!

@rcreger I managed to figure out what code is causing the freeze, how to obtain the freeze, but not why it happens in general. The important thing is that I found out how to fix it.

Once you touch a wisp, it triggers the destroyer block, and for some reason, that makes it so that any other wisp you click on will not show the alert, but will still pause the game. This is very weird and very unexplained; it makes no sense. So what I did that fixed it was I got rid of the destroyer in the wisp and just made it so it sets the wisp’s Y position to -1000, out of sight, mind, and reach of the player. It still makes the sound, and it ‘disappears’ on contact. The best part of all, when you click on a wisp afterwards, the game pauses AND shows the alert! The alert can still unpause, and everything there works golden.

What exact boxes would I use to do this @microgamer1 ? Still pretty new at this, and I have no idea which one to choose

@rcreger Use a number box, and put -1000 in it. Connect the first output of the Pop 4 sound effect to the number’s input label ‘In’. Now put in a position box. Connect the number’s output to the Position’s input labeled ‘y’. That should do it!

Thank you so much @microgamer1 ! Well, a major flaw out of this now, and now I should start thinking about a more sensible sprint (Most likely with Enter). Thanks again, and good luck!

@rcreger No problem!! And thanks!

@ToastMaster64 and @“JR 01” I’ll probably be getting to your reviews tonight, I can’t be home until after 9

Starblast 3

The difficulty varies based off gamemode, but it generally starts off pretty smooth but quickly turns chaotic.

All I can say is be ready

Okay, arrived home way later, I’ll be catching up on most reviews tomorrow as I have nothing after school.
