lmao I honestly have a hard time paying attention to youtube vid tutorials cause the pacing is often so long and I can’t deal with it. I do much better with images and gifs explaining things, so I can read it at my own pace instead of waiting for someone to tell me
speaking of! I highly reccomend saint11’s pixel art tutorials. excellent tutorials for animation and pixel art, I’ll link it here! it’s been a real help now and then when I need tips.
Thanks for the critique. The legs are made of metal because, I don’t actually know, but that’s why they look like Mark Zuckerberg’s real legs. The rest of your critiques will be taken into consideration. Thank you
A bucket for your troubles
@Baron_Wasteland , Do you have any advice on landscape art? Like canyons, mountains, or flowers? If you have no advice could you direct me to someone who does?
well, canyons and mountains are vastly different from flowers, but I’ll cover mountains and other large rock formations first.
thumbnailing it out first is always a good idea. For those who don’t know, a thumbnail is a rough, flowy sketch of what you want. they’re to sketch out an initial idea for a concept, that you can focus on after. here’s a neat example, although even I don’t make my thumbnails look nearly as fancy looking as this, you just want rough sketches, cause the composition (layout of the illustration on the canvas) is what really stands out.
when you’ve found the composition that you like the best (you don’t necessarily have to go through with the whole thumbnailing, it’s just to help you narrow down your ideas on composition), come up with a light source, if the scene doesn’t have a light source in the canvas, imagine where it would be. from then, you can make the shadows on the rocks, cause that’s what gives them volume. you might find it more useful to use few colors for the shading. rocky formations are generally hard and have jagged surfaces, so shadows are harsh and well defined, so smooth gradients make it look odd.
here’s a piece I made about 7 or 8 months ago, you can see some of how I make rocks react with shadows, although the light source here is more ambient, so there isn’t a directional light source.
I hope that I made sense, I kinda rambled about a lot.
Thanks, I’ll keep it all in mind, exactly what I was looking for!
awesome, glad to hear it!
Hey, do you have any suggestions for making running and/or movement animations?
There’s a general guide to walking animations, I’ll share a pic here
it shows the basic frames required for a walking animation.
now, I’m guessing you want a running animation for a game character (cause of course you do, idk why I need to instruct fancy old school animation). a good way to do many animations is by using keyframes, or animating pose to pose. Look at this sprite sheet for the og megaman
you see the very basic poses for running? now, this animation is outdated cause it’s far from being remotely smooth, but the basic poses are still solid. you can look up running keyframes for reference. that’s what I did for the running animation of clockboy for escape the rewind.
GUYS I REPEAT USE REFERENCES, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE NOT SURE WHAT SOMETHING LOOKS LIKE! IF YOU DON’T USE REFERENCES, I WILL CALL YOU A FOOL IN ALL CAPS AND MAKE FUN OF YOU LOUDLY HA HA HA!
hope that helps! (:
Ok, thanks this helps a lot!
Do you have anyone you’d recommend for Pixel-Art tutorials? I’ve never been great at pixelart, but I’d really like to learn. So I might as well learn the basics first before I try to make crazy and advanced sprites
Pixel Pete is pretty decent at explaining art and pixel art.
Has a playlist, “pixel art 101” and “pixel art critique”
yeah I know a few. Pixel pete is neat, makes good stuff. also Brandon James Greer. I also mentionned this guy before, but check out saint11’s pixel art tutorials.
is there a way to pin messages in posts?
How do you draw shoes? I’m pretty proficient with sneakers, and have developed my own style, but I need to learn how to draw other shoes.
Don’t know how to draw a specific thing? USE REFERENCES! STOP NOT USING REFERENCES! TOXIC MASCULINITY STRIKES AGAIN! REFERENCES LOOK EM UP!
WANNA ORGANIZE YOUR REFERENCES? DOWNLOAD PUREREF!
POV: You’re not using references
I agree with this statement
Alright, fine.
This is basically my style of sneakers right now. I can also draw them forward and angled
I like it, I’d suggest adding the tongue of the shoe though.
